Generic Name: Fluoxetine
Use
Prozac is used to treat people with depression and emotional disorders. The active ingredient Fluoxetine blocks the reabsorption of serotonin (a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger in the brain). It is believed that a chemical imbalance in the neurotransmitters in the brain cause depression.
Dosage
Usually taken once or twice a day, depending on what your physician has recommended.
Side effects
Most common side effects are upset stomach, drowsiness,weakness or tiredness, excitement or anxiety, insomnia, nightmares, dry mouth, skin more sensitive to sunlight than usual, changes in appetite or weight.
Precautions
This medicine may take up to 4 weeks before this medicine reaches its full effect. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Use caution when imbibing alcohol. This medicine will add to the effects of alcohol and other depressants. Before you begin taking any new medicine, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. For women: if you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. This medicine is excreted in breast milk.
